GAPS Tea

GAPS Tea Group watermarkRecommended tea for the GAPS introduction diet stages include ginger tea, camomile tea and mint tea and all three have many benefits.  Hot lemon water is another important drink highly recommended to drink first up each morning by Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride.  All GAPS tea should preferably be made fresh from organic ingredients to optimise nutritional benefits, however organic commercial teabags are acceptable.

Ginger Tea: Ginger tea is well known for its relief of pain and inflammation and assists in soothing the digestive tract, reduces flatulence and eases symptoms of nausea.  Sipping this tea throughout the day, with and before meals will aid in the preparation of digestion.  All GAPS tea should preferably be made fresh from organic ingredients to optimise nutritional benefits, however organic commercial teabags are acceptable.

Camomile Tea: The camomile flower has been used for its health giving properties for centuries to help alleviate conditions such as sleep disorders, skin conditions, IBS, PMS and menstrual cramps, migraines and anxiety associated stress.  A good time to drink this tea is an hour before bed.

Mint Tea: Mint has some interesting healing properties associated with settling a nervous tummy and ability to slow down the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi. The most interesting aspect is its well documented anti-fungal properties which are suggested to play a part in the treatment of asthma.

Hot Lemon Water:  The best way to start your day is to drink hot lemon water.  Be generous with the amount of juice squeezed.  Buy a bunch of lemons and aim to consume the juice from one to two lemons a day. Using filtered water, squeeze the juice of one lemon in warm/hot water every morning before anything else.  Try adding some grated ginger for a boost.  Hot Lemon water helps to flush out unwanted toxins and parasites from the body.  The more you consume the better the result. Hot lemon water helps to stimulate bowel movements in the morning and prepares the liver to produce bile which is an acid required for digestion.  Other benefits include it’s ability to balance pH levels, making the body more alkaline.  Lemons also have the ability to aid in weight loss because they are high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings. Studies have shown people who maintain a more alkaline diet, do in fact lose weight faster.

GAPS Tea Recipes

Ginger Tea

Ingredients

• Filtered water boiled
• Fresh ginger root
• A little honey to sweeten (optional )

Instructions

Grate some fresh ginger root and place a teaspoon of grated ginger in the teapot and pour boiling water over it. Let the tea steep for 3 – 5 minutes before pouring through a tea strainer. Mint Tea

Good organic Mint tea can be found at your local health food store, however here are the instructions on how to make your own. There are a variety of mint plants available at nurseries; spearmint, chocolate mint, apple mint, pineapple mint. Lemon mint, etc.

Ingredients

• Filtered water boiled
• Fresh or mint leaves
• A little honey to sweeten (optional )

Instructions

Cut some fresh mint leaves by removing them from their stems. Place the leaves into a pot and pour filtered boiling water over the top and allow to steep for 3 – 5 minutes. Pour the tea through a tea strainer and enjoy. Use one teaspoon of mint tealeaves per cup. Camomile Tea

Good organic Camomile tea can be found at your local health food store, however here are the instructions on how to make your own. Camomile flowers are a little white flowers with a yellow centre like a small daisy. There are two types of chamomile – the Roman or English Chamomile, which is a perennial, and the German chamomile, which is an annual.

Ingredients

• Filtered water boiled
• Fresh or dried camomile flower heads
• A little honey to sweeten (optional )

Instructions

You simply snip the flowers off when they’re flowering in summer, and use them fresh in a teapot with filtered boiling water. About two or three teaspoons of the flower for every cup of water is a good balance. You may also dry them and store them in an airtight container for keeps. A teaspoon of dried flowers infused in a cup of boiling water can be sweetened with a spoon of honey for a delicious calming drink.
